The cosy village of Sissi

Sissi, also known as Sisi, is a holiday resort on Crete. Originally a fishing village, it is centrally located on the north coast of the island. You will find it seven kilometres east of Malia and twenty kilometres from the popular Hersonissos. Incidentally, it is very different from both of these
lively holiday resorts and is more family-orientated. The natural harbour with a pier built against the necessary wave action is a pleasant attraction in the village. Along the small harbour runs a kind of promenade with tavernas, bars and restaurants overlooking a park with palm trees growing on the hillside.

Sissi is a real family holiday destination on Crete

In the small harbour of Sissi you will find the best amenities. Restaurants, bars, terraces, supermarkets and several shops. Particularly atmospheric in the evening hours. Both fishing boats and motorboats are moored in the harbour. In summer, an excursion boat from Chersonissos and Malia docks here daily. Boufos Beach and Avlaki Beach are accessible. Further down near the Robinson Club Kalimera Kriti there is another larger beach, which is also freely accessible and is located in a sheltered bay. Boufos is a sandy beach and Avlaki is mostly covered with small pebbles. Both beaches are equipped with the necessary sunbeds and parasols. In the bay of the small harbour there are several other small sandy beaches where you can also swim.

To the west, between the main road and the sea, is the fairly large Sissi campsite. If you want to go shopping or go out in the evening, Malia and Agios Nikolaos are the right places. You can be here in no time with a hire car or taxi. The best time to visit Sissi is from the end of April to mid-October. Due to the mild climate on Crete, it can also be spring-like here in the winter months.

Agios Georgios monastery in the mountains

 With the Happy Train , for example, you can take a fun excursion to St George's Monastery from Sisi. This monastery is also called Selinari Monastery, because of the canyon of the same name that runs through it, and is somewhat hidden on the main road to Agios Nikolaos.

The beautiful monastery of Agios Georgios is not very big, but very colourful and dates back to the 20th century. In the 16th century, a monk from Rhodes built a small chapel here, which you can still visit.

Olive oil press and farm of the Lyrakis Family

Two kilometres from Villa Eleftheria, you will find the olive oil farm of the Lyrakis family. Located on the other side of the main road, the olive grove with olive press is worth a visit. Here you can see the olive grove, taste olive oil and take a look at their original olive press from 1887. In short, a fun and educational outing for the whole family and what's more, you can score a nice and healthy souvenir right away. Moreover, a visit to this olive press can be perfectly combined with a visit to the aforementioned Agios Georgios monastery.

To the cave of Milatos with white hidden chapel

The neighbouring village of Milatos is seven kilometres from Villa Eleftheria. The traditional village with harbour is an inviting place to eat and drink. The ‘Milatos Cave’, located a little higher up in the mountains, is well worth a visit. Tips are to use the flash on your phone in the (dark) cave of Milatos. The Ottomans carried out a massacre here in 1823 among Cretans who were hiding in the cave. Not far after entering the cave, you will see the hidden white chapel.

Potamos beach is located 1 km west of Sissi. It is considered the most beautiful sandy beach in the area. And certainly not so busy in the early and late season. In June we could easily find a nice spot here, for example, without being 'squadruped' . There was enough space then. It is nice to combine your day at Potamos beach with some culture by also visiting the Minoan Palace of Malia. This archaeological attraction is only 500 meters away from Potamos.
